Adding Upload CSV file to the BugBug tool (datasets for tests)

In my previous suggestion titled “Suggestion about interacting with similar pages”, Mr. Pawel mentioned that “We started working on if-else statements this month”. I think that’s a great start! Building on that, I suggest adding a new feature to BugBug tool that would be useful for everyone who uses if-else statements. The feature is “Adding Upload CSV file to the BugBug tool”.

The properties of this feature are:

  1. It could be a use case as same as “components” that can be used in all tests in a project.

  2. Then the user can use it as an action as same as mouse, inputs, etc.

  3. The action has several steps, such as reading the file, reading a specific data (value) in the file, and assigning it to a variable.

  4. So the user can loop in the data to use different values in the loop steps.

I think this feature is essential in automation testing and is very famous in Selenium and codeless tools. It would be a great addition to BugBug tool and would make it easier to automate repetitive tasks.

I think other vendors call this “Data Driven Testing” where a source file can be used to run the same test multiple times providing different data to variables each time it is run?

Yes, that is what they call it.

@Haian Abou-Karam Thank you for your suggestion. So basically this is not the part of test automation. Is this more like task automation?

Do you want to add a test with the "Upload CSV file" action to your suite?

What's your real-life use case for this? Any references to follow?

@Pawel Bylina Thank you for your response to my suggestion. I understand that you are wondering if this feature is more suitable for task automation rather than test automation. To answer your question, I believe that this feature is useful for both test automation and task automation.

In terms of test automation, I would like to give you an example of how I use the “Upload CSV file” action in my daily life. BugBug documentation includes an example of testing a “Login scenario”. Usually, testing login requires inputting valid and invalid values in several inputs, following a test case table. A good test needs repetition of the test many times, and every time the action will be different. Therefore, reading data from CSV or JSON files by using BugBug tool will save time and effort for repetition. In the current situation, I add the same group different times, and I just change the data every time. So I build a long test steps. While using while and if statements with reading CSV or JSON steps will make the build such test easier to read and maintain.

As for references, here is one: https://www.browserstack.com/guide/data-driven-framework-in-selenium.

I hope this answers your questions. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
